ANNOH-DOMPREH OUTLINES PAN-AFRICAN HEALTH REFORM AGENDA
Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has set out an ambitious agenda to drive healthcare reforms across the continent following his election as Chairman of the Committee on Health, Labour and Social Affairs of the Pan-African Parliament.
His appointment comes at a time when the African Union is intensifying efforts to develop harmonised policies to tackle pressing public health challenges facing member states.
Outlining his priorities, Mr.
Annoh-Dompreh indicated that the Committee will focus on drafting and promoting model laws in key areas such as malaria control, mental wellness, and the integration of traditional medicine into formal healthcare systems. He stressed that these sectors represent urgent and evolving challenges that require coordinated continental action.
According to him, the development of model legislative frameworks will guide member states in adopting policies that improve access, quality, and sustainability of healthcare delivery across Africa.
Beyond policy direction, the Committee Chairman also disclosed plans to facilitate targeted health interventions, particularly in cancer treatment. He revealed that countries including Ghana and Zimbabwe are expected to benefit from enhanced support in addressing conditions such as breast, cervical, and blood-related cancers.
Reaffirming his immediate focus, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh emphasized that malaria, mental health, and traditional medicine will form the foundation of his tenure. His approach reflects a shift toward inclusive healthcare reforms that combine modern medical practices with indigenous knowledge systems.
Stakeholders within the Pan-African Parliament have expressed confidence that his leadership will drive impactful policy outcomes and strengthen healthcare systems across the continent.
