From Student Leader to Nation Builder: Why Professor Joshua Alabi Is the NDC’s Next Best Presidential Candidate

With the National Democratic Congress preparing for its next presidential choice, Professor Joshua Alabi stands out as a leader tested across every level of Ghanaian life. His track record spans student governance, sports, parliament, academia, and corporate transformation.

That breadth makes him the next best presidential candidate for the NDC.

Professor Alabi’s leadership journey began early.

He served two terms as President of the National Union of Ghana Students in Russia, 1983-1985, and later as President of NUGS for the entire European Region.

It was leadership forged in advocacy, organization, and delivering for people.

In public service, he represented Krowor Constituency as Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2001, while simultaneously serving as Regional Minister for both Greater Accra and the Northern Regions.

As Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC from 2001 to 2005, he led the party’s reorganization after the 2000 defeat.

He later served as Campaign Manager for Professor John Evans Attah Mills in the 2004 General Election.

His impact on institutions is unmatched.

As the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra from 2012 to 2016, he transformed the then Institute of Professional Studies into the modern UPSA we know today.

He started with just three undergraduate programmes and left with a full range of undergraduate, master’s, and diploma programmes, earning him the 2015 African Vice Chancellor of the Year award.

At the Social Security and National Insurance Trust, his leadership delivered visible change.

He oversaw the construction of the Bukom Boxing Arena and the Children’s Library at Kawokudi.

More critically, under his chairmanship of the SSNIT governing board, pension allowance was increased by an unprecedented 100%.

His touch has also revived key national assets.

As Chairman of GCB Bank Plc, he turned the bank from a poorly managed institution into a consistently profitable one, with expansion plans now reaching Liberia. As Chairperson of Accra Technical University’s Governing Council, he drove infrastructure reforms and secured land near Nsawam for campus expansion.

That record of results earned him the Order of the Volta from the Government of Ghana in 2016, and recognition from IMANI Ghana in 2012.

From managing the Black Stars alongside legends like Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah, to reforming SSNIT and transforming UPSA, Professor Joshua Alabi has shown the three things Ghanaians demand in a president: vision, competence, and delivery.

For the NDC, he brings experience, institutional knowledge, and a proven ability to turn struggling systems into national assets.

He is not just a candidate with history. He is a candidate with results.

That is why Professor Joshua Alabi is the next best presidential candidate for the NDC.
