GJA Ashanti Organises Environmental Reporting And Personal Safety Workshop

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has organised an Environmental Reporting and Personal Safety Workshop to commemorate this year's World Environment Day.

The workshop, held at the True Vine Hotel in Kumasi on Friday, June 5, 2026, was under the theme, "Inspired By Nature For Climate, For Our Future." The programme was funded by Reporters Without Borders Germany (RSF) and aimed at equipping journalists and young media practitioners with the skills needed to effectively report on environmental issues.

Addressing participants, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association, Mr. Kofi Adu Domfeh, outlined the objectives of the workshop and stressed the importance of environmental protection as a vital source of livelihood and national development.

He also highlighted the need for journalists to prioritise their personal safety when covering dangerous assignments, particularly issues related to illegal mining and other environmental crimes.

Mr. Domfeh noted that environmental reporting plays a critical role in raising public awareness and influencing policies that promote sustainable development. He therefore encouraged journalists to deepen their understanding of environmental issues to improve the quality and impact of their reportage.

Deputy Director of the Ashanti Regional Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mr. Richard Boadi Soadwa, urged journalists to specialise in environmental reporting areas such as public health, water pollution, air pollution, climate change, and natural resource management.

He emphasised that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and called on all stakeholders to contribute towards safeguarding the country's natural resources for present and future generations.
